A Heat Pump’s heating efficiency is measured by the HSFP, the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. The higher the HSPF, the more efficient the heating system. A Heat Pump’s cooling efficiency is measured by SEER, Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the cooling system.
According to the US Department of Energy the average lifespan of a heat pump is between 10 to 15 years although this does not speak to the efficiency of the unit itself. As units age they become less efficient each year. Newer systems will have a higher seer rating and therefore be more cost effective to operate.

Heat Pump Size
Main factors in selecting the correct heat pump size are the size of your home, the insulation levels, building materials, orientation, amount and build quality of windows, and even the duct system itself. Bigger houses may need higher-capacity heat pumps to heat and cool them correctly. But this will also depend on other factors. Allow your heating and cooling consultant to take the measurements necessary to calculate the correct size heating and cooling system for your home.
